5 Things You Need To Know Before Getting A Tummy Tuck

From pregnancy and aging to fluctuations in weight, it can be difficult to shed abdominal fat. When eating healthy and exercising fail to get the results you want, a tummy tuck could be the right solution for you. A tummy tuck tightens abdominal muscles and removes excess skin and fat from the midsection, resulting in a sculpted and smooth midsection. However, there are a few things patients should know before getting a tummy tuck.

1.) Different Types of Tummy Tucks

There are three different types of tummy tucks.

Mini: A mini-abdominoplasty targets skin that hangs around the navel. This procedure removes excess skin and fat from this area to reduce bulge in the lower abdomen.

Traditional: During a traditional tummy tuck, stretched abdominal muscles are repaired and excess skin and tissue are removed from the abdomen.

Extended: An extended abdominoplasty is typically used for individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight. Excess skin and tissue are removed from the abdomen, hips, thighs, and back.

2.) It’s Not The Same As Liposuction

Liposuction is a less invasive procedure than a tummy tuck that focuses on removing fat deposits from a targeted area. A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that reshapes your abdominal muscles and eliminates loose skin. It requires significant recovery time and the procedure leaves a permanent scar.

3.) Recovery Takes Time

A tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure including a hip-to-hip incision that will take time to heal. Patients should expect recovery to take at least three weeks. In the beginning, you may experience fatigue, soreness, and moderate pain. It is recommended that patients take time off from work and avoid physical activity while recovering.

4.) Tummy Tucks Can Heal Medical Issues

Tummy tucks may be used to resolve some medical issues. Your doctor may recommend the procedure to repair a hernia or improve urinary incontinence. Tummy tucks heal diastasis recti, the separation of abdominal muscles that can occur after pregnancy. Diastasis recti can cause lower back pain, poor posture, constipation, and bloating. A tummy tuck would relieve all related symptoms.

5.) Your Choice of Surgeon Matters
