Karaca, M.D., at Birmingham Plastic Surgery.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

If you’re looking for a quick, non-surgical technique to achieve a healthier, more youthful appearance, microdermabrasion may be right for you. It is a procedure that exfoliates the skin to remove the damaged topmost layer. With decades of use and improved technology, microdermabrasion systems are safer and more effective than ever.

The handheld device ejects crystals at high speeds, or contains a diamond head, that promotes exfoliation when moved along the skin’s surface.

Both treatments increase blood flow to the treatment area stimulating the growth of new cells and promoting collagen production.

With minimal to no recovery needed, microdermabrasion is the “lunch break” alternative to complex procedures like laser resurfacing. If you want brilliant, healthy-looking skin quickly and painlessly, microdermabrasion may be the answer.

What Areas of the Body Are Treated with Microdermabrasion?

Areas most often treated with microdermabrasion include:

Most often, only a single procedure is necessary. Sometimes a lighter microdermabrasion treatment may be used in combination with laser resurfacing to enhance effectiveness and results.

Am I a Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

Does your skin suffer from any of the following?

If so, microdermabrasion may be right for you. Results typically last for a few weeks. Monthly maintenance may be necessary. Depending on your desired results, multiple sessions may be booked two to three weeks apart.

What is the Microdermabrasion Procedure Like?

The microdermabrasion procedure begins by cleansing the skin of dirt and oil. The handheld device is applied to the skin and gently maneuvered in a semicircular motion. The diamonds or crystals will buff away dead skin cells that are easily vacuumed or brushed away. Hydrating moisture serum will then be applied with an SPF 30 sunblock to protect the newly exposed cells. Dr. Karaca generally performs the procedure in an hour or less and no recovery time is required, which means you can leave immediately following your procedure.

What Can I Expect During Recovery From Microdermabrasion?

Initially, your skin may be pink and irritated, similar to having a mild sunburn. This sensation will generally subside within a few hours, but your skin may feel tight and dry for a few days before returning to normal. You will be able to resume work and regular activities immediately but are advised to avoid sun exposure for five to seven days, and always to use sunblock (SPF 30). Additionally, cosmetics including makeup and brushes can aggravate the skin causing additional or prolonged irritation. These should be avoided for the first two days following treatment.

How Much Does Microdermabrasion Cost in Detroit?

Microdermabrasion is generally considered elective and cosmetic, therefore, most insurance providers will not cover the cost. Dr. Karaca accepts cash, personal checks, and credit cards. Additionally, financing options are available to help all patients afford treatment.
